Known to many as a radio personality, program director, minister, mentor, father and husband, Xuam (pronounced ex-umm) Lawson is really just an all around nice guy.
Tall, tanned, talented, and full of personality, Lawson has spent the last decade working in radio broadcasting and honing his skills. Listeners are familiar with his role as the side kick on What’s the 411? with Sharon Kay, since the program’s inception six years ago. Kay began the popular talk show at 92Q WQQK at Cumulus Media in Nashville, Tennessee. Lawson stepped into the role of the show’s producer in 2005, while continuing to be the sidekick on the popular empowerment show.
“We [Kay & Lawson] have good on-air chemistry, even though we’re in two different generations, said Kay. He loves talk shows and seeking knowledge so naturally we could talk, and talk they did. As co-workers at 92Q, Kay noticed that she and Lawson we would end up (as a volunteer for the station) being at many of the same community or promotional activities talking about the issues in the community and how to fix them.

Kay took the award winning program and Lawson with her as she joined Fisk University’s 88.1FM WFSK as the General Manager.
Lawson serves as WFSK’s program/production director and host of Real Gospel with the X-Man, heard every Sunday from 9am to 12noon. Real Gospel features top music from the legends, new releases, gospel artist interviews and gospel news from Los Angeles gospel industry insider Phyllis Cadell.
Following a three stint in the U.S. Army, stationed at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky’s 101st Airborne, X decided a career change was in order and later ventured into radio.
Like most media personalities know to make it in ‘the business’ you must “get in where you fit it”. Making a move to a larger city and market was one way to make that happen. He secured a shift as a weekend overnight disc jockey at WQZQ 102.5FM The Party in Nashville from there moved to urban WQQK 92Q, where he stayed for nearly seven years.
While there, Lawson gained a variety of experience in the media business, ranging from disc jockey to producer of the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show, to technical producer and side kick of locally produced What’s the 411? with Sharon Kay program.
During X’s media career, he had a deep spiritual awakening and upon arriving at WFSK decided he no longer wanted to play R&B and Pop music, but wanted from his heart to be a gospel disc jockey. “An opportunity to minister, give back is what I really wanted to do”, explained Lawson, upon making the switch to spiritual music.
His Real Gospel with The X-Man, which airsevery Sunday morning from 9:00am to 12:00pm. program features music from the legends of gospel combined with today’s contemporary gospel music, industry news and interviews.
Now after a decade in the media business and enjoying all the music ventures and interviewing artists, Lawson decided to listen to his heart and heed the call from the Lord to minister. About his Father’s business, Xuam is enrolled as a student at the Historic American Baptist College for Pastoral Studies.
Active in faith and in the community, he’s a licensed reverend and on the ministerial staff of Greater First Street Missionary Baptist Church, serves as communications chair for the Nashville Branch of the NAACP, is a Prince Hall Mason & Shiner & while working on the Fisk campus became a Phi Beta Sigma fraternity member.
